Whenever he saw that little light flashing on his phone, he felt a knot form in his stomach. Nothing ever prepared him for those, even though everything he'd ever been taught in this business--lifestyle--had been designed to.
Four new messages. The first three didn't matter, but the last one... Getting a call from her about a near-death experience always brought a smile to his face. As long as she called, everything would be fine. They had that kind of luck.
Speed dial one. How long had she held that spot? She never even had someone to displace; he'd never had someone he cared to call that much. But he hit it, and he waited through grating rings and her generic voicemail message.
"Remember that time in Singapore? Don't do that. I'll see you soon."
